Little Girl's Puffy Sleeve Sweater

I belong to a group on FB called Crochet Craze.  One of the members of the group showed a picture of a sweater she had just finished.  I saw it, and know it was something I wanted to make.  It is a pattern created by the Double Stitch Twins, and is on the Red Heart site, here.

I had some yarn left over from the baby blanket that I thought I would use.  I crocheted a swatch and found that I needed to use two strands together of the baby yarn from Big Lots, with a K size crochet hook to get the right gauge. I used pink and yellow yarn together for the back, the sleeves, and the peplum.  Blue and green yarn were combined together for the front and the edging.  I also used one less treble stitch in each stitch for the sleeves, since it seemed like it was getting too bulky. It is the smallest size, for a two-year old.   It  worked up pretty fast, since I crocheted it in one evening.  I figured out how to tie it before I photographed it, the next day. :)

Prayer Shawl Helps to Heal

I was having a bad day with MS yesterday.  I was sore all over, and very tired.  I think it was due to the change in weather over the past couple of days, but I am not sure.  It is on these kind of days where I can't do very much, since I have so little energy and hurt with most movements.

There is one thing I can still do.  I can crochet.  God has blessed me with this ability, and I will use it as long as I can to glorify Him!  I often make prayer shawls, where I pray for the person who will receive the shawl while I am crocheting.  Sometimes these shawls take weeks, sometimes months.  I am often crocheting these shawls while I am working on other projects.  When I am finished, I take the shawls to the Prayer Shawl Ministry group at the church I used to attend when my husband was the choir director there.  I also attend this group on Monday afternoons,  when I am not working.  The fellowship I have with the ladies there also blesses me.

So, between naps and some time on the computer yesterday, I finished my latest prayer shawl.  It is an easy pattern that I learned from a baby blanket pattern published many years ago.  The yarn I used was Red Heart's Super Saver in Aran Fleck and Caron's One Pound in Espresso.  The pattern alternates between single crochet, chain three in one row using one color and the next row of three double crochets in the chain three space of the previous row in the other color.  I ended up running out of the Fleck color, so I finished with an old Sayelle Bone-colored yarn I had in my stash.  I love how it turned out.  I pray that the person who receives this shawl will find joy in its making.  It brought peace to me.

Finished Object Friday

It has been two weeks since I posted on Friday, and I have both a knitted and a crocheted piece to show you.

The knitted piece is a shawl done in straigth garter stitch, with a two stripes of  stockinette stitch, just because I got bored with all the K rows!  I love the variegated yarn colors of white, navy blue and maroon.  I think it is Red Heart yarn.  I don't know for sure, because I used yarn from a top I had made myself quite a while ago.

Knitted Shawl

The crocheted piece is a seat cover that I made for my office chair at school.  I came back from summer vacation to find that someone (probably a summer worker) had stepped on the seat cushion of my chair and made tiny gauges that grew every time I sat in it.  I decided to make a granny square to cover those marks. It is made of some nylon/wool yarn that should hold up pretty well.

Star Baby Blanket

Another teacher is having a baby.  This blanket is for one of my husband's colleagues.  I used some fun-fur type mixed fiber yarn that I got at Big Lots and some yellow Red Heart Super Saver yarn.  I made up the pattern as I went.  I may try to write up the pattern. If anyone is interested,  let me know in the comments section.

In the Loop

My newest creation was a difficult one.  I found Crochet! Magazine's Easy, No-Sew Crochet at a local store.  It had over 60 projects with no needle assembly required.  I couldn't wait to start my first pattern.  I finally decided to try the "In the Loop" pattern that is described as a halter-style vest that can also be worn as a buttoned cowl.  I used Red Heart's Super Soft in Burgundy and Gala Yarn for the scallop edging.

It took me three times with crocheting the entire pattern, including the time-consuming scallop edging, before I finally got it to fit right.  For some reason, in the second half of the pattern each row had to be crocheted in reverse order.  I  don't know if it is a left-handed thing, or what.  Anyway, I am pleased with the result.  I think it was worth the effort.

A New Challenge for A New Year

Ali, at Hooked!! A Crochet Addict's Blog, is continuing a project from last year, which I will be joining this year.  She is doing a granny square a day, and you can join in, too.  You can click on her button at the top left of my blog, or click here at Granny-A-Day 2012.

This is my first square, for January 1.  I made it up as I went along, but I probably saw a version of it somewhere else first.  I do not claim it to be an original, but cannot attribute it to the original designer.  I am looking forward to what I can make every day.

Crocheted Wrap Vest

Deciding to take a break from making things for others, I crocheted myself something.  I made a crocheted wrap vest inspired by the one Trudi made at Maude and Me.

Using some yarn from a poncho I had made previously, that I no longer wanted, I made up the pattern as I went.  Unfortunately, the yarn is no longer available, and I don't remember exactly what kind it was, except that it was a Red Heart yarn.  It is crocheted in one long rectangle, and when I noticed that I wanted it about the length of my arm, from shoulder to wrist, I made it that length, and about double that width.

I used a single crochet ribbing on the front panels and I half-double crocheted across the back.  The armholes are thirty stitches long, starting in the eleventh stitch from the top, and using a K hook. I am going to experiment a little with how I will place the vintage style pin.  I could make the collar a little longer or  pin it without.  I really like how it turned out.
