WIP Wednesday

This week I am crocheting a little more.  I finished my last radiation treatment today.  My oncologist encouraged me to keep as active as I can, so I consider crocheting a therapy for my cancer.  :-)

I started a new Corner to Corner baby blanket, using more yarn from my stash and a pattern from Ravelry.  I have used Simply Soft yarn in Baby Bright Ombre and Snuggly Wuggly yarn in Soft Lilac so far.  I am almost to the point where I will start decreasing, to make a rectangle.  I ended up buying more yarn today, as I ran out of the Simply Soft yarn.  I hope it will blend in.

My other project, Granny's Favorite prayer shawl, is 2/3 done.  I have crocheted 162 squares into 18 rows of 9 squares each.  I have nine more rows to go.   I like how it looks like several nine-patch quilt blocks.

I finished reading Daughter of Twin Oaks by Lauraine Snelling.  I really enjoyed this book, with it's surprising ending.  I also finished another book on my Nook, The Preacher's Bride by Jody Hedlund. It is set in the 1600's, in England, around the time when the Puritans were being persecution by the Royalists.  At the end of the book, the author says the book is inspired by the story of John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrims Progress, and his second wife, Elizabeth.  I received both books for free from Book Bub and read them on my Nook Color.

Newborn Diaper Shirt

My crocheting has slowed down quite a bit recently.  I had radiation treatments five days last week, and it really tired me out.  I got something done on the weekend before last, but nothing much since then.  Two more days of radiation on my left arm and leg, and then I will be finished with that part of my cancer treatment.

I made a Newborn Diaper Shirt with the same Snuggly Wuggly Yarn that I used in the hat and sac in my last post.  The pattern was from Bev's Country Cottage.  This shirt will also be for a local charity.

Baby Clothes and Items

Since I had crocheted a lot of blankets recently, and am still in the middle of the Granny's Favorite blanket, I wanted to do a couple of projects that were fast, and could be done in one day.  I ended up crocheting three sets of baby clothes/items.

The first is a newborn baby outfit called "Little Boy Blue Long Pant Suit." The pattern is from Danette's Angels, a site that offers crochet patterns for use with charity items.  I used a skein of Canan yarn from Big Lots in Navy Blue and a K hook.  I even found some navy buttons in my button tin.  I decided to add a couple of rows to the legs and top of the pants and to the body and arms of the sweater, as this pattern was originally for a preemie baby.  This will be for a local charity.

My next outfit is a preemie kimono and hat.  Since I couldn't find a free pattern for a kimono, I adapted this pattern from Bev's Country Cottage.  The yarn is partly Bernat Baby Coordinates and some non-labled yarn from my stash.  I added several rows to make it longer, and added a tie to the inside, that wraps around the back.  The hat is a pattern from Momma That Makes.  If it does not fit the preemie I made this for, it will go to the NICU where she is, for another preemie.

Finally, I crocheted a preemie Post Stitch

Cuddle Sac and Hat from a pattern on the Preemie Hat Project blog.  I used Snuggly Wuggly baby yarn in Soft Lilac and trimmed the sac and hat with Canan baby yarn in Purple.  This will also go to the preemie baby mentioned earlier.  I am sure it will fit, as it is almost as long as the baby!

Four Finished Projects

I am staying home a lot lately, except for doctor appointments, so I have had more time to finish things.  I guess it also helps that they are smaller projects. ☺

The Star Blanket is the first project completed this week.  I used this pattern from Yarnspirations, but used worsted weight yarn from my stash.  I edged it with one row of white dc, and one row of variegated slip stitch.  I tried to do sc first, but ran out of yarn!

The next project was supposed to be a baby sleeper, but turned into a "fleece" vest.  I was using yarn from my stash again, and didn't know how much there was.  So, I yet again ran out.  It looks warm a cuddly.

In honor of Valentine's Day, I made a Heart 

Valentine Candy Basket.  This is another Yarspirations pattern you can find here.  Instead of the yarn listed, I  used a ribbon yarn from my stash.  I originally made it for us, but my husband suggested that I gift it.  We'll see.

Last night I made this Triple Loop Skinny Scarf. I used a free pattern from Little Monkeys Crochet, that you can find here. Again, using stash yarn, I had to modify the pattern.  I used an L hook, worsted weight yarn for the main rows, and edged it with novelty yarn with single crochet.  I added an antique button from my button jar for the wrap piece.  This is my favorite project of the week, and definitely a keeper.

WIP Wednesday ~ 1/28/15

Happy Hump Day!  I have an update on one project and the start of another.  I wasn't able crochet or blog for a week or two due to some time spent in the hospital.  I had a partial hip replacement as a complication of my cancer.  I am glad to be back to both and am on the road to recovery.

The first project is the prayer shawl I am crocheting using yarn scraps.  There are 20 of almost 250 squares, so I have a ways to go.  It will be twenty-seven by nine squares when finished.

My second project is a Star Blanket.  It is also made with yarn from my stash, using this pattern from Yarnspirations.  It is another blanket for a church mission project.

I have almost finished "The Measure of Katie Calloway."  It is interesting to read about the people of the lumber camps after the Civil War and how the aftermath continues to effect the people of the time.

Baby Sweater and Car Seat Blanket

I received a gift card for Michaels from my DH for Christmas, and went to shop there a couple of days after Christmas.  Funny enough, I forgot the gift card!  I fell in love with this book from Leisure Arts, and bought it anyway.

My first project from this book was the Filet Rectangle Blanket.  I crocheted the smaller size, with a G hook and some yarn I got at Big Lots, called "Baby Soft," by Canan. It is a very light blue, although in my pictures, it almost looks gray.   I was a little disappointed by the wonkiness of the middle section, but it will still keep a baby warm. ;)

Then I decided to make a sweater to go with it, and adapted a pattern by Laura Tegg called Chunky Monkey Cardigan.  I modified the pattern to match the filet, and did a reverse crochet edging, like the blanket.

This pair will probably go to a church mission project.

Finally Back

I have been away from this blog for over a year.  Life got very busy, and I had to choose between this blog and another one at WordPress.  Obviously, this is the one I had stopped posting on.  I have continued to crochet, but have not posted the pictures and wips on here.  Because of a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer and it's complications, along with MS, I have had to quit working and have more time on my hands.  So I am here again.

I crochet many prayer shawls and baby items/children's clothes for mission projects at my local church, and the most recent item is the Zig Zag Filet Car Seat Blanket.  The pattern is from a book published by Leisure Arts.  I made it from some old yarn I had in my stash, Sayelle, in the color Frosted Cherry.

Little Girl's Puffy Sleeve Sweater

I belong to a group on FB called Crochet Craze.  One of the members of the group showed a picture of a sweater she had just finished.  I saw it, and know it was something I wanted to make.  It is a pattern created by the Double Stitch Twins, and is on the Red Heart site, here.

I had some yarn left over from the baby blanket that I thought I would use.  I crocheted a swatch and found that I needed to use two strands together of the baby yarn from Big Lots, with a K size crochet hook to get the right gauge. I used pink and yellow yarn together for the back, the sleeves, and the peplum.  Blue and green yarn were combined together for the front and the edging.  I also used one less treble stitch in each stitch for the sleeves, since it seemed like it was getting too bulky. It is the smallest size, for a two-year old.   It  worked up pretty fast, since I crocheted it in one evening.  I figured out how to tie it before I photographed it, the next day. :)

Two Projects with Puff Ball Yarn

The baby blanket is finished!  It really knit up pretty quickly, once I got the hang of it.  I think it is around 30"x 36".  I actually knit through one ball and part of another ball before I decided it was going to be a lot bigger than I planned.  So I frogged it and redid it.  I like how it turned out.  Even my husband commented on how soft it was.

I only used two skeins, so I decided to crochet a scarf with another skein.  The pattern was demonstrated on a video by Mikey, from The Crochet Crowd.

                                                     

It is very quick and easy.  I finished in about thirty minutes, and still have about 2-3 yards of yarn left.  Now I have to figure out what to do with the other skein.  Maybe I will make another scarf to give to someone else.

Puff Ball Blanket

Two years ago in November, I saw several skeins of pink Bernat Puff Ball yarn on clearance at for $1.19 per 3.5 oz skein.  I am a breast cancer survivor, so I was interested in seeing that some of the money from the purchase of these skeins would go toward  Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  I purchased four skeins, put it in my yarn stash when I got home, and promptly forgot about it.  Every time I would see it since, I would think that I needed to figure out what I would do with it.  Finally, I decided to make a baby blanket with it last night.

I started to crochet a scarf with it first, but realized that would only use one skein, so I decided to knit a baby blanket instead.  I am knitting a smaller version of the blanket from Bernat's Peppermint Stripe Blanket pattern in just the pink, so it will be without stripes.  It took me about three tries to get the hang of it, but now it is going along fairly smoothly.  I hope it is not too bright.  I know it is nice and soft.

Granny Stripes Baby Blanket

I have crocheted a baby afghan in the pattern commonly called granny stripes.  I have seen it many places around the internet, so I don't have a particular pattern link.  I used a baby yarn from "Big Lots" that is labeled as Hand Knitting Yarn For Baby Projects.  I chained the length I wanted, using a G hook, and then crocheted a 3 dc shell in every other stitch.  The next row was a 3 dc shell in the place between the shells, just like in a granny square.  I chose to have three rows of each color, with 12 rows of white between them.  I edged the blanket with a row of sc, followed by a row of sc, ch 3, sc.

Newborn Boy Outfit

Last week I shared the Monk Strap Loafers, and said I would maybe crochet a vest and cap to go with it.  Well, I didn't have enough yarn for both, but I was able to make a vest.  I used a free pattern I found online, at Red Heart's website.

I used a size F hook with the 6 month size pattern, so that it would be smaller.  I found out that I had to change colors half way through the vest so that both sides would be the same front and back.  If the vest and shoes don't fit at the same time, then they can be used separately.

Monk Strap Baby Loafers

I fell in love with these baby shoes the minute I saw them on Whistle and Ivy.  I wanted to crochet them right away.  I decided to make a pair for my church charity that provides clothes for kids in the area that would not normally receive brand new clothes.  I used yarn from my stash in cream and brown and started with the 0-3 month size.  Once I read the pattern correctly, they worked up fairly quickly.  I think I am going to make a vest and cap to go with them.  I know I will definitely make more in other colors and sizes.

Baby Cocoons

I have made three baby cocoons for little ones recently, and now that they have gone to the recipients, I can share the pictures with you.

The first was for a preemie, who was only two pounds at birth, and 14 inches long.  Fortunately for he and the parents, he grew out of it quicker than I was able to get it to him.

The other two were for newborns, and stretched a little more.  I adapted a pattern from Christina's Sunshine Haven.  In the first one, I decided to sew up the top, to make a hood. I only used one strand of yarn, so it is really stretchy.

The other one is made with two strands of yarn.  I took off the top part, the head rest, and made it a little longer.  I also made a matching hat.  This is the one that was my favorite.

I asked the new mom for a picture of the babe in that one.  I hope it fit!

Gingham Baby Blanket

I have fallen way behind on my Granny-a-Day Challenge.  Back in September, I bought a bag of granny squares already made for $3.  All I had to do was stitch them together.  There was probably more than 200.

I started with the white, light blue and dark blue squares, and based my blanket off a pattern in one of my granny square books.  I finished with a border of dc's in a soft fuzzy blue yarn from my yarn stash.

Missing All of You

Since I am back to work full-time at school, I rarely get to get on here, either to post or to visit any other blogs. It was wonderful this summer, especially during a very difficult period health-wise, to come on this blog and see your encouraging comments.  But now the school-year is in full swing, and I am often too tired to get on the computer when I get home, much less to crochet.  So that is why I am not posting as much, or rather, rarely.  I still think of all of you blogging friends, and will post and visit when I can.  These pictures are my latest two projects.

Granny's Corners Baby Blanket

So, the blanket is finished.  It  is small, only about 22"X28", but it looks to be a good size to cover a baby carrier/car seat.  I love all the pinks together.

I outlined each square in an off-white, and then crocheted v-stitches in different pinks with a row of single crochet in aran in between, and finished with a scallop edge in the aran color as well.

Tuesday's Tallies/ GAD 2012/WIP

With school starting this week  and some personal issues, I have not done a lot of crocheting.  I am combining a couple of posts into one.  I have ten squares of my Granny's Corners project, and I still have scraps of pink yarn left to use.  I may even get a 4 square X 4 square group that I can crochet around.  I guess we will see...

A Ta-Da for Tuesday

The baby blanket is finished, and I am really pleased at how it turned out.  I wasn't able to squeeze out a fourth orange square, so the blanket is a total of 24 squares.  It is about 30" X 24" and is just the right size for an infant or toddler.  I used a single crochet for a simple edging.  Another blanket I would love to keep, but have no real use for.  After all, I don't crochet these for personal use anyway.

Tuesday's Tallies/GAD Update

There is another color to my Starburst squares, and I am up to twenty-three.  I have nine of off-white, six of melon, six of aqua, and two of my newest color, orange.  I hope I can get at least two more out of the orange ball, and make a 5x5 square blanket, which will be about 30"x30."  That sounds like a good size for a baby blanket, right?

I just noticed that the squares look like different sizes, because the yarns are not all the same texture/weight, but close.  I hope it all works in the end.
